Building BYOT

Over the next several months, we will be taking on the task of implementing a BYOT program here in Seguin. Although we are several months away from being ready with our wireless infrastructure, I am already looking at other programs and research and trying to reflect upon our experiences implementing the program back in Birdville. What I would like to do is keep something of a journal of our progress here as we go through the process. Hopefully, this will encourage some brilliant folks who visit here to share their insights. Also, it might be something of a learning tool for those who are considering, but not yet ready to give BYOT/BYOD a go.

At this point, there are more questions than answers. Among the questions we will be sorting out before we get the ball rolling…

  • What devices will be included as acceptable technology resources?
  • How will we meet the needs of students who do not own personal devices?
  • How will our current AUP need to be modified?
  • What does effective use of student technologies look like in the classroom?
  • Will we allow students to use their own cellular data networks or require them to access our network?
  • How can we provide technical support to students when trying to use their devices?
  • What are some classroom management strategies that will increase the likelihood of success for our teachers and students?
  • What professional development will be provided for teachers?
  • How will the program be rolled out? High school first? All secondary? District-wide?
  • How can a BYOT be successful at a low-income elementary campus, where very few student owned devices are available?

So, any answers?

    Hey, Randy,
    I jumping in on BYOD next year with my dual-credit English class. They are my willing guinea pigs, so we’re going to build the class around 3 primary resources: Google Docs, Evernote and Edmodo. Of course I’ll use lots of other apps & programs, but those 3 will be constants.
    Primary reason for using these for creating, collaborating and communicating is that they are all available as iPhone or Android apps. I also group text with students often and use Gmail as an assignment delivery tool. I’m working through my syllabus now and deciding how to effectively use students’ devices in most aspects of the course. I’ll let you know how it goes.

      Hi, David,
      Sounds like you have a good plan in place. Those are all extremely useful apps with a wide number of applications. Have you tried Socrative? I do know they have iOS and Android versions of this one, too–great formative assessment tool. Keep me posted. Can I assume you’ll post updates in the newsletter?

    Hope you are settling in at your new job. Here in Pearland ISD, our new GT Academy is piloting BYOD. We should have survey data soon, and if I’m privy to any of it, I’ll be sure to share it with you. Of course, I’m totally sold on it and use it everyday in my classroom.

    Doesn’t look like I’ll be attending or presenting at the White Oak TCEA event this year. I’m travelilng to Bloomington IN with a group of students from our district to the Future Problem Solvers International Conference.

      Thanks, Mark–hope to see some of that data. I won’t be at WO this year, either–moving the family down that week (finally). Enjoy the conference–just from the title, sounds like a very cool event.
